Matchbox Vs Oxford Diecast

I know Sapper Joe is a great believer in the Oxford 1/76th cars but I have never been convinced. They always just looked small to me. In my games I want barricades and road blocks of cars, I need something to hide behind. The big chunkier Matchbox cars seemed ideal. However it is getting harder and harder to get period Matchbox cars in good condition and at a reasonable price. So I have revisited the Oxford option (see my previous post). And am gradually coming round. There is a great variety of cars and the prices are reasonable if you can pick them up reduced. They still look a bit small though, no doubt due to my figs all being on Pennies. I am thinking of basing them on some of that Wills cobblestone plasticard. That should bring them up a bit.

  1. Ah ha! I have another convert! Seriously, one of my pet peeves that only applies to my games is using stuff that is really out of scale with each other, like 15mm and 1/87; 1/76 and 1/64 or 28mm & 1/43. Some times it looks ok together, but more times it looks like midgets around big cars! This is not to say that I poo-poo on doing it as it can be a lot cheaper, more available, etc. I just prefer a closer scale match, like 1/76 & 1/72.

  2. Well I found a RUC landrover in my local model train shop. I dont care if its 1/74 or 1/72 - its a result. Just need some wire mesh.

  3. Would that happen to be the Oxford diecast model? I picked one up already myself.

  4. Thats the one! Not sure what to do with it as I didnt plan on doing Ulster. Still, it will be fine for a section of Blue Berets; its grey and the "police" is hard to read at a gamers westland scout view of the table!

  5. You got me excited thinking it was an armoured 'Landy' Still it's a grey authorities Land Rover snatch wagon carrying oppressors of the proletariat.
