Daimler Armoured Car Timewarp

Found a pair of Daimler Armoured Car kits in the garage. The Daimler saw action in WW2 and served in Territorial Army units well into the 1960's. Those not sold or scrapped may have been laid up in sheds around the country and could become available to our Winter of 79 protagonists with at least some work.

I fancy them as rebel Trade Union armour. I have a sneeking fondness for the Daimler, partly I think due to the enduring comic image of Tom Courtenay heroically riding atop one in 'Billy Liar'.You can just imagine Arthur Scargill leading the Yorkshire Miners from the turret can't you.

Expediency in times of national emergency or crisis is a wondeful thing. So what other readily available WW2 armour can we bing to the party without things getting silly. I'm tempted by the Britannia Miniatures' Dingo Scout car as a one off. Whilst the Humber Scout and A-34 Comet could also make an appearance somewhere down the line. Perhaps converted with differet turrets or additional makeshift armour and weapons.

I wonder if I can shoehorn the mantlet and gun from an Airfix Scorpion/Scimitar kit onto the Daimler? That would make a very suitable 1979 upgrade methinks. Off now to try..............

Cheers

  1. Nice idea about the upgrade. A nice urban colour scheme would look interesting for these old timers!

  3. Hi Alan

Schiltron. My god, there's a blast form the past! In a word No.

I get very little medieval gaming done these days. Though I am planning to build two 28mm medieval Italian forces for Basic Impetus - simple is king.

    Thanks for remembering them.

  4. Paul,

I like the idea, so what scheme/colours do you envision?

I think they should be draped with Union banners and slogans too.

Do we go for an armoured bus or transit van?

  5. Mark, A mate of mine who was in the Queens hussars or something, Was telling me that when they got back from Beirut they took their Ferrets to a big storage facility in England somewhere. There they saw lots of Daimlers and Humbers stored in aircraft hangers.

  6. Funny you should say that Mike, I know of hanger stored with shiny Fox a/cs.

Not such an outrageous idea then. (shame)

Don't go there. Great concept but lacked in execution.

  9. I've always loved British armored cars. They have a certain something that only the German armored cars can challenge.

I wish somebody would do some future tech versions for scifi gaming. I've been tempted to just do a few minor mods and slap them down on the scifi table.

Check out this Laserburn website: They use Humer Armoured Cars as the basis of their 15mm Sci Fi armoured force.

  11. What about the Berlin Garrison scheme, looks great on a Chieftain, might have to scale it down for a AC though.

  12. Possibly Paul - perhas with a Brick Red base - remember that my 'london Brigade' uses Berlin Brigade urban camo which is going on a couple of Foxs -as opfor the Daimlers would need something different jn my games.

But otherwise I agree the Berlin scheme would look great on them.
